A few months after Petty's arrest, his friends reportedly harassed her family so much that her foster aunt took Jennifer to court to have the charges dropped. She did not drop the charges, instead, she moved to Florida while the case continued.

In 1995, Petty was convicted of attempted rape in the first degree, assault in the second degree, unlawful imprisonment in the second degree, and criminal possession of a firearm. He was sentenced to 18 to 54 months in prison but served nearly four years before being released in January 1999.

After receiving backlash from fans for meeting Kenneth Petty in December 2018, Nicki Minaj defended him in her Instagram comments. Regarding the rape allegations, the rapper wrote, "She was 15, she was 16...in a relationship. But go away, internet."

"When you're somebody's wife, you need to pray for others," Minaj declared during a 2019 episode of Queen Radio. "Because you should cover your husband in prayer." This was a direct response to the criticism that came after Nicki announced that she married Patty. She also said, "But white is right," spreading the belief that the victim in the 1994 case was a white woman, but, the victim is a black woman.

In November of that year, after Wendy Williams addressed Petty's brushes with the law during the "Hot Topics" segment of her October episode, Minaj released a response via Queen Radio.
